Black Homeownership Project

The Center for NYC Neighborhoods (the Center), DIVAS for Social Justice (DIVAS) and The ABNY Foundation today announced the launch of the Black Housing Project, a collaborative youth-led multimedia history and storytelling project to highlight the diverse stories of Black homeowners across New York City, focusing on Southeast Queens and Northern Staten Island. Approximately 60 students from ages 9-17 will create a multimedia storytelling project to highlight the city’s history of Black homeownership, through a variety of mediums including augmented reality, community journalism and short films, and feature interviews with community members. The final project is expected to be showcased at various locations throughout New York City and online to educate about the importance of Black homeownership. The Black Housing Project is part of a broader Affordable Housing Youth Organizing Program taking place in Queens and Northern Staten Island, which has created a curriculum to educate the next generation of New Yorkers on housing history and topics such as redlining, gentrification, blockbusting and the subprime loan crisis.
